I also liked the main character who was a teenaged girl in the way I remember being one--testing her boundaries and her identity. As you read and follow her story you can see her trying to figure things out and trying to be the best person she can be as the situation changes. Something I very much liked about this book was that the gods, for all their power, took a backseat to the humans. It isn't the gods' story and they don't get to be at the center of it. It would have been all too easy to let that happen--and to come up with magical fixes for things--but at the end it's Kyra who has to make the hard decision and act. Having read many of the reviews prior to reading the book I was going into this reading not expecting much. I quickly found that it was not deep or poetic like Laini Taylor or Cassandra Clare but it was very well written, straight and to the point. The few parts with differing POVs were smooth and easily discernible. It has all of the components I like: Gods of all types, ethnicities, and character who we're not center stage and their god-like attributes were not overused to move the plot along adnausium. There is a Secret society with some pretty cool toys and operatives. I also really liked the fact that the plot was not predictable and the pace was fast. So all in all a really easy, fun, and most importantly enjoyable read. I've heard that this book is for fans of Percy Jackson, but I honestly didn't get that vibe off of it. I loved the world building here, and the characters were well written, but I could have used more back story.
All in all, though, this story has more going for it than against it, and I ended up enjoying it very much.
4/5 stars. (
