De laatkomer is a very lame story. It purports to relate the story of Désiré Cordier who pretends to be demented, pulling the whole act off for reasons that never become very clear in the book. One possible reason could be to escape his wife, but if that is so, then the scheme seems rather overdone. No other benefit becomes apparent, while no climax is developed. Instead, the plot mounts to a kind of anti-climax, in which another character who is apparently also pretending to be demented, tells Cordier that his act is obvious and easy to see through. De laatkomer is a comedy about Alzheimer's Disease. It never rises above the level of an improvised sketch, a very, very bad play, and hence and very bad novel.
