Questa recensione è stata scritta per Recensori in anteprima di LibraryThing. It took me forever to get through this book, and as the Director of a non-profit housing company i was initially eager. This was way too much of a memoir to be about HOAs and too much about HOAs to be a memoir. ( )Questa recensione è stata scritta per Recensori in anteprima di LibraryThing. Received this free from Librarything Early Reviewers. Normally, I try to be diligent and finish a book before reviewing it. But sadly, I couldn't even get past the 2nd chapter. Let's just say it was pretty obvious that the author was not going to be able to just talk about the problems of HOAs. I felt like I was reading to opening of his memoirs. Somewhere in his pointless anecdote about a cornfield, I gave up. Sorry.Questa recensione è stata scritta per Recensori in anteprima di LibraryThing. The overall tone of this volume was too sensationalistic for me, and the presentation felt cheap. As an historian, I was hoping for something that came across a bit more scholarly; Mr. Lucas makes many good points about the origin of housing associations and the over-reach of citizen policing, but his evidence is undercut by the presentation. Readers interested in the deeply problematic origins of America's housing associations might turn instead to Robert M Fogelson's Bourgeois Nightmares (http://www.librarything.com/work/411155).Questa recensione è stata scritta per Recensori in anteprima di LibraryThing. Mr. Lucas' provocative book reads like a manifesto to wake up the sleeping masses with a jolt of reality. In a documentary on HOA's, "Neighbors At War" is really nothing more than what my parents told me: "If it looks too good to be true, It is too good to be true. In my bouts of home ownership I have always avoided HOA's. Anyone who tells you what color to paint your door sounds like an intruder on basic freedoms. Now I know it's not the color of your door. - It's money. But... As Lucas explains - when you sign those freedoms away then Cuba Russia or Venezuelan look like pretty nice places. If you're on the bad side of the "collective" - Bad things happen. A great romp through the world of the dark side of HOA's. This book awakened a latent joy for "schadenfreude". Yes It's biased, but what do you expect from a book sub titled "The Creepy Case Against Your Homeowners Association". Read this BEFORE you Buy.!!! Questa recensione è stata scritta per Recensori in anteprima di LibraryThing. I was interested to learn more about home owner's associations because I think they do have an interesting legal status. This was not quite the book I was hoping it was. The author is very upfront in his introduction that if you are looking for a thoughtfully reasoned examination of the home owner's association phenomenon this is not it. It is more of a well-researched, fully expounded rant. The book would have been much better had the author started by telling his story chronologically from start to finish. He doesn't do that however. He tells it piecemeal, with many asides detailing other HOAs' abuses. I found it confusing and, frankly, hard to believe.nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione
This is a critical examination of the modern Homeowners Association movement, and how it has robbed 62 million Americans of their civil rights as outlined in the U.S. Constitution. Home-owners often move into these planned communities and unwittingly sign documents that control their behaviour in a multitude of ways. Failing to abide by these 'personality and private behaviour' controls has cost thousands of home-owners their homes, their life savings and their peace of mind. While HOAs were theoretically created to protect property values, there is incredible incentive for HOA board officers to "go rogue" and unnecessarily abuse fellow home-owners. When that happens, neighbourhoods are torn apart, property values plummet and lives are ruined. Another national scandal is the amount of financial corruption of HOA board members. In one American city, federal indictments of dozens of well-known public figures show what happens when HOAs go out of control. Non sono state trovate descrizioni di biblioteche |
