A vampire story of a knowing, self-reflecting sort. Given that Carter's fiction is described as feminist in the first line of her Wikipedia article, I was surprised at the ineffectuality, even patheticness, of the titular lady - who is the beautiful queen of the vampires and last of the Nosferatu line - especially as contrasted with the young Englishman who encounters her. Her vampirism is used, not entirely subtly, as a metaphor for sexuality and the implications are not ones all feminists would approve of.

Ideology aside, I found it an enjoyable tale, if perhaps a little too self-consciously literary.
