A Celestial Omnibus is subtitled Short Fiction on Faith. I bought it off the discount shelves. Since this book comes from the publishing house of the Unitarian Church, I should have expected a very broad interpretation of what "Faith" is. The five sections of this anthology are (a) Mystery, (b) Doubt, (c) Evil,
(d) The Supernatural, and (e) Reconciliation, but "Doubt" doesn't stay confined to its own section. All in all, this is a fairly gloomy book. Certainly, this mortal life is a vale of tears, and it doesn't hurt to be reminded of that, I guess, but shouldn't faith provide us with a good measure of joy, as well?

I give this book only three stars, but to avoid being overly negative myself, let me mention three of the stories that I'm glad I read:

(a) "Pigeon Feathers" by John Updike is about a farm boy who is concerned about life after death and about his catechism instructor and his parents who aren't. (Cf. 1 Corinthians 15:19.)

(b) "Act of Faith" by Irwin Shaw is about Jews, anti-Semites, and non-anti-Semites in the wake of WWII. A very touching story.

(c) "First Confession" by Frank O'Connor is a humorous look at an Irish boy's first confession. Not exactly faith-promoting but it's funny (and relatively harmless). Reminds me a little of a Bill Forsyth movie. ( )
