The controversial, long-awaited prequels to the best-selling graphic novel of all-time are finally here: Before Watchmen! For over twenty years, the backstories of the now-iconic characters from Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons's landmark graphic novel have remained a mystery, until now. DC Comics has assembled the greatest creators in the industry to further paint the world of Watchmen, with this volume starring two of the most polarizing anti-heroes ever, Comedian and Rorschach. Eisner Award-winning writer and creator of 100 Bullets, Brian Azzarello, brings his gritty, nuanced storytelling to these two recognizable characters. In Rorschach, Azzarello again teams with superstar artist Lee Bermejo (Joker, Luthor, Batman/Deathblow) to illustrate how one of most dangerous vigilantes the comics world has ever seen became even darker. Comedian, featuring art by J.G. Jones (Final Crisis, Wanted), plants the famed war hero within the context of American history, as we find out how the Vietnam War and the Kennedy assassination revolve around him. Collects Before Watchmen: Comedian #1-6 and Before Watchmen: Rorschach #1-4.… (altro)

Finally finished reading all the Before Watchmen comics. This one was the quickest out of the volumes, but don't let that be a negative. It may have been a quick read, but it was probably one of the better volumes. Not as good as the Minutemen comics, but pretty damn close. This volume had what the others novels lacked though: the dark, gritty, violent, and uncomfortable side that Alan Moore delivered.

The Comedian's part I liked because it used a lot of that alternative history that Watchmen used. It was fun seeing the Kennedy's in a comic book with talking parts. The artwork was really done well too. Even the parts about the war seemed interesting to me, which they usually don't. Jones really draws his character like they are real people.

At first, I thought I wasn't going to like Rorschach's segment, but I was wrong. End up loving it. The story was quick but everything held together. It didn't really connect with the other books in case you haven't read the other Before Watchmen's of Watchmen it's self. The artwork in this was really good too I thought. Bermejo draws like he is from the 70s and so his style fit the comic book. Making you feel like there is some 70s disco music going on in the background.

This is another Before Watchmen I highly recommend if you like the Watchmen series. This one was just pure fun and the art work was well put together in this one too. ( )

Both the Rorschach and Comedian storylines were utterly redundant and unnecessary - they added no no information, complexity, or insight into the characters established in Watchmen. These are the Watchmen equivalent of the Star Wars prequels - a story that did not need to be told, told poorly. ( )

And I am done with the Before Watchmen series. I have posted my review of this one, as well as the others, on my blog, The Itinerant Librarian. Actually, I gave it 3.5 out of 5, but y'all know GoodReads by now.

Yes, a Rorschach book ! I saw this book and my inner Rorschach loving nerd went crazy happy. It all started with a President, a bleached blond bombshell and a very suspicious death. This prequel was a fun early look at my favorite character the fearsome Rorschach. His character stays fairly true to the original.
The artwork is fabulous. Beautifully colored and detailed. I hope to grab the rest of the series. ( )
