Questa recensione è stata scritta per Recensori in anteprima di LibraryThing. Have not read the first book in the series, but plan to after finishing this one. What I really enjoyed reading about was Cuba as there has been a "news blackout" of this island for fifty years. Did not realize it had so many turistas, and so many rules applying to those visitors. Good read, and I will recommend it to friends.I don't usually read mysteries, and am not a fan of "magical realism", so this book was not one I expected to love. I found many references to things that had happened in the previous Inspector Ramirez novel, which made it difficult for me to really understand the significance of much of the action. The plot moved along well, but the wrap up involved a long explanation by the main character as to how he'd pieced things together. Now I remember why I don't read mysteries! Enjoyable mystery involving a Cuban policeman. I have not read the first novel in the series, but now plan to do so. The comparison of Canadian and Cuban laws is made quite interesting as is the conditions in Cuba for Cubans. The story engages the reader, but its the settings that made it really good reading for me. Questa recensione è stata scritta per Recensori in anteprima di LibraryThing. I was sent this book to review. The back-cover blurb gave me some concern. It talked about a priest and child pornography. The potential for serious creepiness was there. It wasn't as bad as anticipated. There is nothing explicit in the book. It reads fairly well. However, there is still enough vague creepiness to give one pause. There is a lot about various spirits and allusions to pornography and child abuse. I did find myself rooting for Inspector Ramirez and hoping that he would make it all right. He comes close. Not sure I can recommend this book to everyone. There are people who will understandably find just the basic premise offensive. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione

Meanwhile, Inspector Ramirez, head of the Havana Major Crimes Unit, is dispatched to Ottawa to take custody of a Cuban priest apprehended by authorities while in possession of a laptop full of child pornography. Ramirez will uncover a web of deceit and depravity that extends from the corridors of power in Ottawa to the hallowed halls of the Vatican--and back again."--Publisher website.
