For my first review for the 801 Manga Moveable Feast, which is dedicated to boys' love/yaoi material, I thought I'd look at . . . an English language web comic? Manners, Sarah! Still, I think this OEL M/M sci-fi web comic turned to print is definitely worth highlighting during the 801 MMF. It's an excellent story populated by three-dimensional characters in a fascinating futuristic world that begs for further exploring.

Al geruime volg ik de webstrip The Young Protectors (http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/typ/ete_title_page/) waarvan elke woensdag en zaterdag een nieuwe bladzijde van beschikbaar komt. En sinds enkele maanden ben ik ook Patron geworden van de maker Alex Woolfson (https://www.patreon.com/alexwoolfson) die strips met homoseksuele helden is gaan maken zodat hij zich eindelijk ook in deze strips kan herkennen.

Artifice is zijn eerste graphic novel en deze vond ik in de Humble Bundle met divers LBGTQ-leesvoer. Ook dit verhaal heeft hij destijds gratis via internet beschikbaar gesteld waarbij lezers de gelegenheid hadden om op elke bladzijde te reageren. Alex Woolfson is indertijd ook mee gaan doen met reageren als zijnde een van de personages uit het verhaal. Op de laatste bladzijden van dit boek staan enkele voorbeelden hiervan weergegeven en het is duidelijk hoeveel plezier maker en lezers met elkaar gehad hebben.

Het verhaal vind ik niet zo heel verrassend en tegen het cliché aanzitten. Een AI die tegen de opdracht van zijn baas is ingegaan en een relatie is aangegaan met een van de mensen die hij had moeten doden. Spannend vond ik wel hoe deze AI door de bedrijfspsycholoog wordt ondervraagd en zij hem meerdere malen in het nauw drijft waar hij vervolgens vlekkeloos uit weet te komen. De vraag is dan of hij inderdaad de waarheid spreekt zoals hij op dat moment geprogrammeerd is.

Het tekenwerk ziet er goed uit maar heeft niets speciaals in mijn ogen. Prima illustraties die het verhaal ongestoord ondersteunen.

Ik was vooral gecharmeerd van het nawoord van schrijver en de illustrator. Hierin leggen ze uit hoe ze elkaar hebben gevonden en hoe deze strip verder ontstaan is. De vriendelijkheid en het plezier van deze makers spat ervan af. (
