In this work, Eric Johnson explodes the myth that the Nazis ruled solely by terror - that ordinary Germans were their victims too. Using thousands of original Gestapo case files, interviews of Germans and Jews who experienced the Reich at first hand, and investigations of the "local Eichmanns" who presided over Jewish affairs as well as scores of officers who staffed regional headquarters, he shows that the Gestapo had neither the power nor the desire to act other than selectively, targeting chosen minorities and sending the handicapped, Gypsies, and above all Jews for extinction. Johnson also documents the ways in which, after the war, government officials, business leaders and heads of all the main religious groups took part in the cover-up that minimized prosecutions. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione
Nazi Terror tackles the central aspect of the Nazi dictatorship head on by focusing on the roles of the individual and of society in making terror work. Based on years of research in Gestapo archives, on more than 1,100 Gestapo and "special court" case files, and on surveys and interviews with German perpetrators, Jewish victims and ordinary Germans who experienced the Third Reich firsthand, Johnson's book settles many nagging questions about who, exactly, was responsible for what, who knew what, and when they knew it. Nazi Terror is the most fine-grained portrait we may ever have of the mechanism of terror in a dictatorship. Non sono state trovate descrizioni di biblioteche |
