We come upon the story here after 11 children and a bus driver have been buried underground for over 40 days inside a school bus. A crazy cult leader has kidnapped them and believes that these children will be the purified lambs that usher in Armageddon on the 50th day. It is the story of the children's experience and the saga of what is going on above ground in the effort to negotiate their release or rescue them. Highly recommended. ( )

I enjoyed the first Molly Cates mystery, The Red Scream and sought out this second in the series. As a claustrophobe and a reader who detests depiction of child abuse, image my reaction to find that the book centers on the imprisonment of a group of children by a religious sect in a buried school bus. After a few chapters, I put it down, but did get back to it in a few weeks and pushed through it. It’s well written enough, although it’s more of a thriller than a mystery, but I still found the subject matter to be distasteful, so I can’t recommend it. I like Willis’ characterizations and dialogue, and wish there was more from her, but apparently she stopped writing (or getting published, at any rate) after the third installment in the series, which I’ll review at a later date. ( )

Elva skolbarn och busschauffören Walter Demming kidnappas av den fanatiske sektmedlemmen Samuel Mordokai. De hålls som gisslan i en nedgrävd buss under en lada och nedräkningen har börjat.

Mordokai är övertygad om att jorden kommer att gå under. Gisslan ska "renas" innan detta sker: den enda mat som de får äta är flingor och mjölk, mediciner är inte tillåtna och varje dag får de stå ut med Mordokais timslånga predikningar. FBI:s medlare arbetar förgäves för att få Mordokai att ta reson: han tänker under inga omständigheter släppa sina "oskyldiga lamm".

Då kommer kriminalreportern Molly Cates in i bilden. Tillsammans med en pensionerad polishund, Vietnamveteranen Jake Alesky och Walters granne Theodora Shea, samt en nunna omskolad till FBI-agent tar Molly allt större risker för att frita gisslan innan det är för sent.

Mina tankar

Boken är bitvis riktigt spännande. Walker har gjort ett fantastiskt porträtt av Mordokai och det är lätt att förstå den desperation som gisslan måste ha känt i hans våld. Tyvärr tappar handlingen fart för varje gång som Walter Demming berättar ett avsnitt av sagan om kalkongamen Jacksonville. De här partierna är alltför långa och alltför många. Dessutom tycker jag det är synd att man inte får följa med lite mer i FBI:s försök med att frita gisslan. Deras arbete nämns bara lite som i förbi farten och det gör att jag som läsare, inte känner att jag är delaktig i vad de gör eller hur de gör det. ( )
