Selbert chronicles events of World War II London through the great bond between Winston Churchill and his miniature brown poodle, Rufus. This is an excellent biography of Churchill for young readers. Timeline of World War II, Author’s Notes on Churchill and poodles, and on Churchill himself, Bibliographies, a Webliography, and Quotation Sources.

This book describes World War II through the eyes of Winston Churchill's dog, Rufus. Called his constant companion throughout the conflict, this book describes where Churchill worked and lived during the war. Although it does not go into much detail about the war, I did enjoy that the book ended with a timeline going into details about the conflict as well as a brief biography about Churchill. This book is better for younger audiences due to its lack of actual history. In saying that, though, they do have snippets of Churchill's actual writing during the war. This story is a great way to introduce children to Churchill the man through the eyes of his faithful companion, Rufus. ( )

I like this book because of the way that the plot is organized. Rather than writing about only one portion of Churchill's life, the author recaps major events of World War two and his life during this time. I also like the illustrations because they are appropriate for the book and for children viewing it. For example, there is a part in the book when they are talking about bombing of a city. The picture shown is buildings surrounded by smoke. I think this is appropriate because you get the picture of what is going on without going overboard and showing the death. The big idea of this book is to give a recap of who Winston Churchill is and his role in World War 2. ( )

I had mixed feelings about this book after reading it. I liked the book because it provided historical information in the form of a story. But I didn’t like the book because I believe it would be challenging for many students or children to understand. After reading this book, I noticed that there was a significant amount of background information necessary in order to fully comprehend the story. The time period of the book is during WWII and you must have some understanding of the events that occurred. I believe that the book is hard to follow because there are direct quotations from Winston Churchill in random places. However, I did enjoy that at the end of the story there is a timeline and other additional sources. The illustrations are very colorful and definitely help to enhance the story. I particularly enjoyed the illustration and explanation of D-Day. The story provided a minimum amount of explanation about the historic events that occurred. The main idea of this book is to tell the story of Winston Churchill and his relationship with his dog, Rufus, during the time of World War II. ( )

The story of Winston Churchill and his dog Rufus during the War and the D-Day invasion is a different insight. There are so many books about World War II, this one is simple. It is about Churchill living in a Bunker and planning the D-Day invasion with the allies. The book also includes quotes from Churchill himself. With just reading Hana's suitcase and The Candy Bomber in Children's literature this was a good side book. Hana's Suitcase is about the war itself and how it connect people all over the world. The Candy Bomber is about the after math and the starving Germans, and the American pilots who helped. Then this book is about London's view during the war. All three would be good to do as a class read whenever the students discuss World War II. ( )
