"New York Times bestselling author Maria Duenas returns with The Vineyard, a magnificent story of ambition, heartbreak, and desire set in the 1860s Mexico, Cuba, and Spain--perfect for fans of Kate Morton and Kristin Hannah. Mauro Larrea's fortune, the result of years of hardship and toil, comes crashing down on the heels of a calamitous event. Swamped by debt and uncertainty, he gambles the last of his money in a daring play that wins him an abandoned house and a vineyard an ocean away. Mauro travels to Andalusia de Jerez in Spain with every intention of selling the property and returning to Mexico. That is, until he meets the unsettling Soledad Montalvo, the widow of a London wine merchant who bursts into his life unannounced, determined to protect her family's legacy. Before long, Mauro finds himself immersed in the rich culture of the sherry trade. As his feelings for Soledad ripen into a consuming passion, he seeks to restore the vineyard to its former glory, propelling himself toward a future that he never could have imagined. From the turbulent young Mexican republic to flourishing Havana to the fertile vineyards of Jerez in the second half of the nineteenth century, when the wine trade with England transformed the Andalusian city, Maria Duenas' new novel takes place on both sides of the Atlantic, the New World and the Old. This story of family intrigue vividly conjures the noise and grit of silver mines, the sophistication of the Mexican capital, and the earthier lure of ancient vineyards and magnificent cities whose splendor has faded. Here is a story of courage in the face of adversity and of a destiny forever altered by the force of passion"--… (altro)

Mauro Larrea sees the fortune that he had built after years of hardship and toil come crashing down on the heels of a calamitous event. Swamped by debts and uncertainty, he gambles the last of his last money in a daring move that offers him the opportunity to resuscitate his fortune. But when the unsettling Soledad Montalvo, wife of a London wine merchant, comes into his life, her passionate intensity lures him toward an unanticipated future.

La Templanza spans diverse worlds, from the young Mexican republic to magnificent colonial Havana; from the West Indies to the Jerez of the second half of the nineteenth-century, when its wine trade with England turned the Andalusian city into a legendary cosmopolitan enclave. A novel replete with glories and defeats, with silver mines, family intrigues, vineyards, and splendid places whose grandeur has faded in time, La Templanza is a story of resilience in the face of adversity, of a lifeline forever altered by the force of passion.

Cheesy predictable soap opera.
At times it feels like a unpolished draft. Characters make unexplained leaps and details are lacking when other places they are explicit. The man character flips between stoic self-made high class businessman and impulsive, selfish renegade. He has a trusted advisor whom he repeatedly ignores and a 15 yr loyal servant who he treats like a rookie. His decisions are not logical but the author treats them as if there are no alternative options.
At other times, the story reads like the author is hoping her story will be made into a movie. There are many locations and scenes that would be big budget but impactful and entertaining on screen. Mexico to Cuba to Spain, plenty of saloons, balls, mansions, sweeping vistas and cultural locations to keep it interesting. Plus a lot of drama at every turn. Obviously there is a love story to cap it all off.
Read A Time in Between by this author and give this one a pass. Or take it to the beach, where it does work. ( )
