( ) This book was better than I thought it was going to be. It had far less romance than it seemed it would have based on the first couple of scenes, which it earned it a massive amount of points in my book. The characters more or less thought things through and kept their attention where it needed to be focused with little distractions, which is rare in the YA books I've picked up lately. The story itself was rather interesting and because of the previously mentioned aspects, flowed really well. I don't usually find myself drawn to stories set in space, but I like how this one focused on the characters rather than the surroundings, although the ship aspects were cool. The reason I knocked the rating down a couple of stars was because the main character, though not terrible, had a touch of the stupids. He was waaay too trusting of Dax and Sierra. His behavior towards Hammer could perhaps be forgiving because of the background with him. I saw Sierra's initial "betrayal" coming from a mile away and often found myself wondering how Jeth was ever made captain/leader of the squad. One aspect that I often found irritating was a couple of the characters' unwillingness to cause any harm, even if it meant they would be almost 100% safe against backlash. The ending was good, and though I know the book has a sequel, I don't think I will be continuing and will just treat this as a standalone. This book was better than I thought it was going to be.
