Fantasy. Fiction. Science Fiction. Historical Fiction. HTML:Naomi Novik’s beloved Temeraire series, a brilliant combination of fantasy and history that reimagines the Napoleonic wars as fought with the aid of intelligent dragons, is a twenty-first-century classic. From the first volume, His Majesty’s Dragon, readers have been entranced by the globe-spanning adventures of the resolute Capt. William Laurence and his brave but impulsive dragon, Temeraire. Now, in Blood of Tyrants, the penultimate volume of the series, Novik is at the very height of her powers as she brings her story to its widest, most colorful canvas yet.
Shipwrecked and cast ashore in Japan with no memory of Temeraire or his own experiences as an English aviator, Laurence finds himself tangled in deadly political intrigues that threaten not only his own life but England’s already precarious position in the Far East. Age-old enmities and suspicions have turned the entire region into a powder keg ready to erupt at the slightest spark—a spark that Laurence and Temeraire may unwittingly provide, leaving Britain faced with new enemies just when they most desperately need allies instead.
For to the west, another, wider conflagration looms. Napoleon has turned on his former ally, the emperor Alexander of Russia, and is even now leading the largest army the world has ever seen to add that country to his list of conquests. It is there, outside the gates of Moscow, that a reunited Laurence and Temeraire—along with some unexpected allies and old friends—will face their ultimate challenge . . . and learn whether or not there are stronger ties than memory.
BONUS: This edition includes an excerpt from Naomi Novik's Uprooted.

Naomi Novik - Blood of Tyrants: The whole amnesia bit was bound to happen at some point (more suffering for our protagonists) and at least that means there’s only one book left. #cursorybookreviews #cursoryreviews ( )

IMO the weakest of all of the books. The first 60% was Lawrence and his amnesia. The book ends quite abruptly, mid battle too. Which, made the book all the worse when I thought it was the last one in the series. But, I guess there's another to be had. That is actually the most redeeming part - that there is at least 1 more book coming. I never wanted to say goodbye to Temeraire. ( )

Advance copy provided by Net Galley-I thought I needed to wait to review it until it was officially released, but the result was that I waited so long to write the review that I forgot why I had only rated it 3 stars originally. I just finished paging through the published copy and feel it deserves a higher rating than my initial one.

Ah, Temeraire and Laurence-one of my absolute favorite literary relationships! That is probably why I was so frustrated with the beginning of the book-they're separated after a storm at sea damages their ship and sweeps Laurence away. I got more and more antsy, the longer they were separated, and the amnesia storyline drove me a little crazy. But there was a lot to love about this second-to-last (boo!) installment-great battles, both small and large; plenty of touching moments between Laurence and Temeraire; the arrival/rescue of Arkady and Tharkay and more meetings with dragons of other cultures. Naomi Novik's imagination is endless.

The ending wasn't really much of an ending with this one, and I'm eager to read what happens next. What I'm not eager about is this series coming to an end. ( )

Oh, Temeraire darling, how I’ve missed your dragon-y self, and your darling captain Will, too! What a pity that your return ended up being a bit of a slog, although the beginning had lots of promise: Will wakes up shipwrecked on the shore of Japan, alone and without his memory. The first section of the book, following Temeraire’s desperate attempts to find Will, and Will's desperate attempts to find ... himself, was great. However, I’m afraid I’m getting a bit weary of battling Napoleon all over hell’s half acre and most of Europe. I get it, he’s a military genius. Whatevs. I’m reminded that my least favorite historical nonfiction deals with military strategy and battle play-by-play, and apparently adding dragons isn’t enough to change that fact. Still, dear Temeraire, we’ll always have our memories of your bratty teenage years to make us smile. ( )

This is about where I'm ready to get off.

I don't think the quality of writing was the problem, but rather the story choices and the decision to make this a 9 book series instead of a leaner 3 or 4 books series really dampened my enjoyment of it. Much like the last few books, there are staggeringly boring sections where the plot seems to take a few steps backward after teasing us with great potential. The middle section of Blood of Tyrants is quite good, but the first and last third force me to question if this book was necessary at all.

A few really interesting potential thought experiments brought up in the first few books never seem to materialize, it's just Laurence and Temeraire globetrotting instead of the plot getting on with it.

I'm still interested in the last book, but no longer excited for it. Temeraire is still an unforgettable character and I love the relationship between Laurence and his dragon, but the 8th book in the series really soured me on the whole ordeal. ( )
