Fiction. Literature. Mystery. Historical Fiction. HTML:

A sorcerer in wax. A fugitive. Haunted by a past he cannot escape. Threatened by a future he cannot imagine.

Zummo, a Sicilian sculptor, is summoned by Cosimo III to join the Medici court. Late seventeenth-century Florence is a hotbed of repression and hypocrisy. All forms of pleasure are brutally punished, and the Grand Duke himself, a man for whom marriage has been an exquisite torture, hides his pain beneath a show of excessive piety.

The Grand Duke asks Zummo to produce a life-size woman out of wax, an antidote to the French wife who made him suffer so. As Zummo wrestles with this unique commission, he falls under the spell of a woman whose elusiveness mirrors his own, but whose secrets are far more explosive. Lurking in the wings is the poisonous Dominican priest, Stufa, who has it within his power to destroy Zummo's livelihood, if not his life.

In this highly charged novel, Thomson brings Florence to life in all its vibrant sensuality, while remaining entirely contemporary in his exploration of the tensions between love and solitude, beauty and decay. When reality becomes threatening, not to say unfathomable, survival strategies are tested to the limit. Redemption is a possibility, but only if the agonies of death and separation can be transcended.

The novel is set during the post renaissance Florence. A perfect weekend read - completed it within 4 hours. ( )

Rupert Thomson is a great storyteller. Secrey is rich in intrigue and mystery, darkness and evil.
Zummo is an Italian sculpture commissioned by Cosimo lll in Florence to create a woman from wax. Zummo falls for a young woman who is mysterious and full of secrets. Zummo acquires powerful enemies in court like the snakish Stufa. He must save his friends and his love from the evils in court.
i did enjoy this novel. I did find some physical descriptions like when he dismembers a body to use as his wax sculpture, a bit gruesome. ( )

I picked this book up from a cruise ship library, but even though I found a copy in my local library when I returned home I didn't get round to continuing before it was due back at the library. Historical fiction isn't really my thing.

Wanneer een Siciliaanse kunstenaar eind 17e eeuw voor een opdracht naar Florence trekt, komt hij nauw in aanraking met de terreurdaden van de Inquisitie

Blurb
A sculptor of the macabre. A sorcerer of wax. A criminal. A runaway.

Set in Florence blighted by corruption and austerity, Secrecy is a tour de force of whispered pleasures and startling revelations. It is a scintillating, breathtaking read from a novelist at the height of his powers.

My thoughts
With a blurb like that, I was hanging out to read Secrecy by Rupert Thomson.

Such a magnificent premise: an artist working in wax in Florence in the 1690s, obsessed with the plague and making wax figurines depicting the suffering of the human race. His dark matter attracts the attention of the Grand Duke of Tuscany, who asks him to create a commission that is daring, never been done before and could cost the protagonist his life.

Somehow, the novel just didn't 'get there' for me. If anything, I felt as though Thomson was holding back dark aspects of character in case it made the protagonist unlikeable. I was also holding out for a scene featuring the Grand Duke with his commission that never took place.

Such a disappointing read when I was looking forward to it so much. ( )
