If they get caught they could be beaten to death. Eventually she learns the alphabet and they have a scare about getting caught. At the end of the book she figure out how to spell her name. This is a great book to understand what the slave future was and the struggles they had to go through. ( )

In this time period slaves were beaten it they attempted to read or write. She goes from learning to eventually teaching other slaves how to spell. They had to stop going to the woods to learn because some other slaves were caught and nearly beaten to death. This book tells the story of a mother and daughter who are slaves and sneak away to learn to read at night. They and other slaves meet in a pit covered in branches and learn their letters from a literate slave, though they risk their own safety and even their lives in doing so. The mother tells her daughter, Rosa, that when they are free, knowing how to read will be helpful to them. Although this particular story is fiction, African-American slaves truly did meet in pit schools, risking injury and death to learn to read. ( )
