sboyte: One is fiction and one is nonfiction, but the subject matter is similar and I think both will appeal to anyone who enjoys science with a dash of humor.

The scientific details of creating each new device and system are carefully described. electronicmemory: Andy Weir and James S. A. Corey met at a book signing and agreed that The Expanse series and The Martian set in the same time-line. So, if you're a fan of The Martian and want to find out what happened after Mars was colonized, read Leviathan Wakes. If you're a fan of The Expanse series, and want to read about the very first Martian colonist, read The Martian.

Come mi succede molto spesso, dopo aver visto un film tratto da un libro non ho pace finché non leggo il libro in questione. Ed eccomi qui. Questo romanzo è riuscito a farmi fare le ore piccole col batticuore nonostante sapessi già come andava a finire e conoscessi già il 75% dei suoi dettagli. In modo diverso, l'ho amato tanto quanto "Red Mars" di Kim Stanley Robinson, il che è un enorme complimento.
Weir crea con abilità un perfetto mix di tensione e umorismo, costruendo personaggi affascinanti, una trama complessa e ben strutturata e condendo il tutto con tanta scienza senza però risultare mai pesante o noioso, in uno dei libri più appassionanti e intelligenti che abbia mai letto. ( )
The Martian is technically a “hard science fiction” book – a subgenre of science fiction so firmly rooted in science that the story wouldn’t work without it. And certainly, Weir’s first work is science-heavy; he even mentioned in an interview that the book was an exercise in whether he could make a fictional narrative out of the scientific premise of the novel. The answer, obviously, is “yes,” and The Martian is an intriguing exercise in the way that science itself can create plot.

But she was afraid of a tattoo needle. Man, I miss those guys. Jesus Christ, I’d give anything for a five-minute conversation with anyone. Anyone, anywhere. About anything. I’ m the first person to be alone on an entire planet. Okay, enough moping. I am having a conversation with someone: whoever reads this log. It’s a bit one-sided but it’ll have to do. I might die, but damn it, someone will know what I had to say. And the whole point of this trip is to get a radio. I could be reconnected with mankind before I even die. So here’s another first: Tomorrow I’ll be the first person to recover a Mars probe.
