Sisters Carey(14) and Janessa (6) live in the woods in a dilapidated camper with their drug-addicted, bi-polar mother, who has kidnapped them years ago from their custodial father. Their frequently-absent mother finally contacts social services to admit that she can no longer care for them and discloses their location. When the father and a social worker arrive at the camper, the conditions are far worse than they had imagined. The girls have no electricity, no running water and are living on canned beans. Carey is doing her best to care for Jessa, who has selective mutism. Carey is terrified when her father suddenly appears and their world changes dramatically when they live with his wife and stepdaughter. (

A harrowing tale, recommended by my school librarian, that is deeply compelling from the second page, just like it's reviewers have said. You will be so quickly drawn into Carrie's world, both the past and the present, so realistically scoped. The compartmentalization is a master craftsmanship, as are all the slow reveals that you figure out in the last half of the book about everyone. I definitely recommend it to others. (

Una caravana destartalada en lo más profundo de un bosque, donde no llega ningún camino, no es el lugar ideal para que crezcan dos niñas. Pero es el único hogar que Carey y Janessa conocen desde que su madre las ocultó allí. Según ella, porque corrían peligro. ¿De qué o de quién tienen que escapar? Carey, la mayor, nos cuenta con sus propias palabras su historia, un relato capaz de helar el corazón de quien lo lea.

Disturbing.
(not 'trying and falls short' but genuinely IS)
But hopeful too.

It takes a particular kind of book to truly disturb me.

But it's not without faults. (
