This review is from: Children's Classics and Modern Classics: Wings Of Courage (Paperback)
Written in George Sand's later years to entertain her young granddaughters, this little story (150 pages) tells of Clopinet, a lame farmer's boy in late 18th century Normandy.
When his father decides that he can never work on the family farm - or go to sea as Clopinet dreams - the boy is sold as apprentice to a cruel tailor. How Clopinet escapes, and discovers that the 'wings of fear' for which his father once derided him are actually turning into wings of courage forms a pleasant little tale.
While living rough, Clopinet discovers a great love for the seabirds around him. Are those mysterious invisible voices, wheeling above him in moments of crisis, some kind of bird or spirits of the sky? Clopinet is a boy of principle whose life turns out very different to his father's original plan...
