Roddy Dolan, a successful suburban surgeon, long ago left behind his past--one that nearly landed him in jail at 17. When he's approached by an old friend about becoming a silent partner in a Manhattan steakhouse, he's understandably wary. So he consults with his lifelong blood brother, Danny Burns. Danny's convinced this "vanity project" is the perfect trophy to illustrate how far they've travelled. Certain he's buried his checkered past, Roddy joins in this venture with serious reservations. Danny is quickly sucked into the high-energy glitz of the restaurant, but Roddy is suspicious. Amidst the glitter of New York's nightlife, amongst Mafia honchos and Russian thugs, events spin out of control and the lives Roddy and Danny knew are over. Hidden shady dealings drag them and their families into life-threatening terrain. Struggling with a monster he thought he'd buried, Roddy must make momentous choices, and none are good. But he has a daring plan . . . This crime drama thriller is filled with mystery, New York city nightlife, and suspense."Rubinstein, a master at his game, introduces us to a world of glitz, glam, sex, and intrigue. Slip into a chilled martini and settle in for a literary ride you won't soon forget."--Judith Marks-White, author of Seducing Harry and Bachelor Degree"It was fantastic, riveting, suspenseful, twisting, loving, horrific."--Martin West, film and television actor and filmmaker"The characters in Mad Dog House are compellingly real. A quick read, with an interesting premise. I had some problems with the book (the main character's current life is just a little too perfect in every way, a few too many coincidences, etc.) but I would probably read the author's second effort. I think some of the problem were common to first-time authors. ( )

Roddy Dolan is a successful surgeon, who for some reason or other, thinks buying a restaurant is a good investment. Just proves that physicians know little about investing. Anyway, it turns out to be less than a raging success, and the good doctor finds that he must take things into his own hands.

That turns into more problems. This is a typical morality play, proving that a guilty conscience is a very powerful tool. It could have used better character development, and bits of the story are a tad far-fetched. ( )

Dr. Roddy Dolan is a successful surgeon and if best lifelong friend Danny Burns is doing well as a financial consultant and tax man. Both had worked hard and succeeded in getting out of the slum they grew up in. Roddy got a choice, army or jail and he turned his life around after that. Now both have good lives and great families. Someone from their past shows up with an offer to join on a thriving restaurant. It's an excellent deal, a no brainer. However, as the saying goes, if it's too good to be true, it probably is.

This book really makes one think about how far one would go to protect family and friends. What would you be willing to do and do you think you could live with the consequences? Have you really even thought of all of them? What kind of threat (if any) to friends or family would make you consider murder? Not only that but accepting the consequences of that action should you get caught?

I had a few issues with the book, mostly I think the author was putting himself too much in place of the main character. Overall I think it was well written and while enjoyed isn't the right word for the subject matter I think it was worth the time spent. ( )
