Hammer is made aware that Velda is missing and perhaps being held by Soviet agents. Having been a little drunk for the past seven years, he has to make a deal with the FBI to get a new gun licence and goes off, using his usual mixture of brutality and....well, brutality. ( ) Published in 1962, it had been 10 years since Spillane put out a Mike Hammer novel. Seven years had elapsed in fictional time since we last saw Mike in [b:Kiss Me, Deadly|153626|Kiss Me, Deadly (Mike Hammer #6)|Mickey Spillane|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1202972869l/153626._SY75_.jpg|148301]. That one left a bit of bitter taste in my mouth. It was so over-the-top ridiculous, I just had to laugh so I could get through it. So, why read the next one in the series? I’m a fan of noir fiction as a break from the more serious stuff, and Spillane was the only choice I had at hand. Well, I was pleasantly surprised. The seven to ten year break that Spillane took away from writing about Hammer must have reinvigorated him. This one is pretty taut, and Mike shows up with a few flaws, and is more believable. The dialogue is not as crisp and memorable, but the story is better. Of course, Mike still sees women as just sex objects, but he’s only got one who falls in love with him this time. Thankfully, he doesn't go on and on about the shape of her lips.
10 of the Greatest Cold War Spy Novels “The first James Bond novel, Casino Royale (1953), was widely viewed as a British take on Mickey Spillane’s sex-and-violence format. When Mike Hammer’s creator took a ten-year hiatus from writing his thrillers, Spillane’s paperback publisher promoted Fleming as an alternative. With a boost from fan JFK, Fleming became so successful that Spillane focused his comeback novel, The Girl Hunters, on espionage, pitting Hammer not against gangsters but KGB agents. Hammer springs back from a seven-year drunk when he learns his long-missing secretary/lover was recruited into a lengthy behind-the-Iron-Curtain mission for the CIA. Now Hammer races a Soviet assassin code-named the Dragon in the hunt for the returned (but still M.I.A.) Velda. Spillane’s unfinished sequel, Complex 90, begun in 1964, has been completed (by me) and just published by Titan.” Appartiene alle SerieMike Hammer (book 7) Mike Hammer Novels (book 7) Appartiene alle Collane EditorialiUllstein Buch (940) Ullstein Krimi (940)
