I tried not to go into this with any preconceived ideas or expectations. It’s very different from what I normally read, but that’s not why I didn’t enjoy it.

The characters are my first complaint. There’s no real depth. I know this is a novella, but that allows plenty of time to connect to a character. I never felt the connection I look for in all stories. This could have been about anyone. Also, I immediately didn’t like the doctor because he’s married. That means, when he’s with Elle, he’s cheating on his wife. Not cool. That really ruined the whole thing for me. I am totally against cheating for any reasons.

Putting the cheating thing aside, this story would have been much better had it been longer and included portions of their relationship, rather than just sex scenes. Though the whole BDSM thing isn’t something I’ve ever tried to read before, most of it didn’t bother me. I wasn’t crazy about him making her crawl around on the floor like a dog. That kind of passes over into the realm of demeaning in my opinion. The knife play was also really not sexy at all to me. It was just kind of freaky. Aside from those two things, it does a decent job of showing what’s really behind a BDSM relationship: trust. ( )

I am definitely not familiar with the BDSM lifestyle and can't begin to comprehend being in that lifestyle. Reading His Elle definitely took me out of my comfort zone. Elle meets a doctor during a visit to Urgent Care. We never find out the doctor's name. Information about him is very minimal. Two years later after that visit, we find out that he is her Master and we discover what traumatic event landed her in Urgent Care. I would think after experiencing what she did, the last thing Elle would want to do was to be submissive to a man. But Master has gained her trust through training and patience. We see that he cares for her, a lot, and despite being the Dom, he wouldn't do anything to push her beyond her limits.

His Elle was a dark read for me. Even though Master cares for Elle deeply, I couldn't help but wonder why love her this way? Especially knowing what she has been through. The author expertly portrays the deep feelings and conflicts that Elle and her Master experiences. I finished the story wondering where does it go from here?
