If you’re looking for an entry point to reading Canadian theatre, you can’t go wrong with Kim’s Convenience, especially if you’re a fan of the hit TV show. It’s an emotional play while being very, very funny. The House of Anansi Press edition I read contains not just the play, but a foreword and an introduction that describe the context in which the play was written, a few photos from the Fringe Festival and Soulpepper Theatre productions (in which Paul Sun-Hyung Lee looks either a lot younger than he does in the show or is just wearing a goatee rather than a full beard, like he does in the show), and a note at the end about how the play was adapted for the screen. I’d never watched the show but have seen plenty of clips and commercials, so I was able to easily imagine Appa and Umma in particular, given that the same actors played those characters in the show and the play. If I find a copy of this out in the wild, I’ll buy it for myself. It’s a great read. ( ) nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione
"Mr. Kim is a first-generation Korean immigrant and the proud owner of Kim's Convenience, a variety store located in the heart of downtown Toronto's Regent Park neighbourhood. There, he spends his time serving an eclectic array of customers, catching petty thieves, and helpfully keeping the police apprised of illegally parked Japanese cars. As the neighbourhood quickly gentrifies, Mr. Kim is offered a generous sum of money to sell - enough to allow him and his wife to finally retire. But Kim's Convenience is more than just his livelihood - it is his legacy. As Mr. Kim tries desperately, and hilariously, to convince his daughter Janet, a budding photographer, to take over the store, his wife sneaks out to meet their estranged son Jung, who has not seen or spoken to his father in sixteen years and who has now become a father himself"--Back cover.
