The California gold rush opened floodgates of adventure and opportunity and within one year brought 250,000 argonauts from half a continent or several seas away to participate in the "bonanza" experience. It also drew a rather small but impressive crowd of women who were as anxious as their male counterparts to challenge the brave new world in the West.
