"I found out two things today: One, I think I'm dying. And two, my brother is a perv."
Jenna is ill and thinks she's dying. Her brother rushes her to the hospital and the two are in a terrible car accident. When she wakes up in the hospital, her brother seems different and a shinier version of himself. When they realize Jenna is being poisoned through her beloved books! Jenna and Casey start digging for the truth about the poisoning, their incapacitated mother, and their missing father. A fun romp, replete with guardian angels. ( )

Jenna and her family are having a rough time - and then it gets even worse after Jenna and her brother are in a car accident. I found the story entertaining but not compelling. ( )

Sweet Dead Life is such a refreshing angel story. The angels aren't broody, or anything like angels in other books. In fact this angel is the sort, you might not want your kiddos hanging out with.

Jenna is an awesome character. She's spunky, and doesn't hold back her thoughts. I love that's she's out there. I also adore the fact that this book isn't centered around her pining over some boy. Her and her brother, Casey, are trying to figure what is wrong with her and her mom. They have supported their family any way they can. Casey is a mess. He tries to keep food in the house for Jenna, and his biggest downfall is that he is stoned much of the time. He has the best of intentions though.

I really enjoyed the fact that Preble included drugs in her story. It's something that kids face everyday, and I hope that they can choose what's right and wrong. The story is fast paced, and there's always something that keeps Jenna and Casey occupied. You realize how important these siblings are to each other. I love how they react to each other. It reminds me a lot of my relationship with my brother. We annoy each other, but we love each other. It's the same for these two.

If you're looking for a fun, quick read, then this book is for you. It's sweet, loving, and mysterious. I'm ready for the sequel next year! ( )

The Sweet dead life – by Joy Preble 14 year old Jenna’s life has been falling apart since her father left a cryptic note and a coupon for dinner at a Tex-Mex restaurant and disappeared 5 years earlier. Jenna’s older brother Casey gets stoned much of the time even though he holds 2 jobs to support the family. Their mother has become a virtual walking ghost, eating almost nothing and taking vitamins her former boss, a doctor, brings over. The worst part is that Jenna herself always feels sick; when she collapses at home Casey drives her to the hospital but they crash along the way. Waking up in emergency, Jenna remembers Casey covered in blood, but he’s there with her, looking all cleaned up. Her mother’s former boss, Dr. Renfroe, is caring for her. An EMT named Amber from the scene of the accident stays with them even after Jenna’s ready to leave, wanting to be sure enough tests are run to find out what’s wrong with Jenna. They learn Jenna is being poisoned with a rare snake venom. Faced with mysteries on top of more mysteries, Jenna, Casey and Amber try to find out what’s going on, even as Jenna faces confusion about puzzling questions she has about Casey and Amber.

This mystery has some supernatural elements that fit perfectly within the plot. This is the first title in what promises to be an intriguing series.

Sweet Dead Life, The Madeline Lambert does an excellent job narrating this light fun tale about a girl and her guardian angels. Lambert perfectly captures the sassy attitude of the main character as well as the more laid back personas of some of the other characters. While most of the characters in The Sweet Dead Life lacked real emotional depth, this narrator gave each of them an engaging personality that allows the reader to connect with them. The Sweet Dead Life was a quick and simple read but I was a bit confused about who the intended audience are. Based on the writing style, characters, and plot, I would consider it a middle grade read except that a lot of the story discussed the 14 year old MC's older brothers pot smoking habit and masturbation issues. I didn't think that either of these things added anything of significance to the story, it just seemed a bit awkward. The story itself was fun & sweet, it reminded me of the shows my 11 year old watches on Nickelodeon, a bit dramatic but still fun. The main character was especially sassy & so entertaining to read. It was definitely an enjoyable read. I would recommend this to more mature young adult readers who like campy humor like Harold & Kumar.I received this title through AudioGo for review. ( )
