This is a treasure, an anthology that I will return to every Christmas for favourites. Lovric has collected excerpts, stories and poetry, all on the topic of Christmas, from women authors of all genres, all eras. There is a brief introduction to each of the more than 50 authors, who include familiar names like Vera Brittain, Agatha Christie, Charlotte Brontē, Emily Dickinson, Sue Townsend, as well as lesser-known names. The seduction was immediate when I read the first piece by Moira Andrew in the form of a letter from Mary to Miriam describing the birth in modern parlance. Christmas began with a good but harassed woman giving birth in difficult domestic circumstances. Somewhere between then and now the circumstances have changed, but for women today Christmas is still a time of joys garnered against the odds. We have moved on from stables and mangers to supermarkets and microwaves, and instead of palm fronds, shepherds and lambs we have a fat red-suited man, a spangled conifer and well-stuffed stockings. In this anthology reflecting the experiences of more than fifty women at Christmas, Jenny Eclair rubs shoulders with Agatha Christie, George Sand, Sue Townsend, Stella Gibbons, Clare Boylan and others. Curl up with a tantalizing volume that gives full reign to the seditious humour, discomforts and exquisite social tortures of the season. Non sono state trovate descrizioni di biblioteche |
