The Aftermath of Revolution: Sligo 1921-23 di Michael Farry (thegeneral)
thegeneral: This is a very well researched book and is a rigorous analysis of the Civil War period in Sligo. The author gives a good historical account of the War of Independence and the Civil War periods and the local political setup at the time. Significant figures are highlighted. Chapters five to nine are an innovative type of analysis as they detail the geography of civil war incidents, the social background of participants, the effect of the conflict on daily life in Sligo, law and order in Sligo and the effect of the conflict on the Protestant population. It is a well written and argued book which is of a more in depth type than some other similar recent county publications on the Civil War.… (altro)

Civil war in Connacht, 1922-23 di Nollaig Ó Gadhra (thegeneral)
thegeneral: This is a very interesting book. Most of the books written about the Civil War are from a pro-Treaty perspective and in this one O Gadhra is sympathetic to those who took the Republican side in the conflict. The author also provides a general picture of how the civil war came into being which is very readable. While the title reads the Civil War in Connacht the book chiefly deals with the Civil War in Galway rather than in other areas of the province. I expected that the book would make reference to the conflict in the other western counties as well such as Sligo and Mayo. This is perhaps a work for other books.… (altro)

Donegal & the Civil War: The Untold Story di Liam O Duibhir (thegeneral)
thegeneral: This book came be seen as a continuation of O Duibhir’s previous book “The Donegal Awakening” which dealt with the War of Independence struggle in County Donegal and how the County had shifted politically towards republicanism after the Easter Rising. It can be read in tandem with general histories of the Irish Civil War or with the now growing volume of literature of the conflict in specific counties. The book is rigorously referenced and is also well written. Sometimes though several chapters are considerably shorter than others which makes the structure of the book appear a little disjointed.… (altro)

This is a very interesting and readable book. I had never before read a book about the War of Independence and the Civil War in County Mayo. It follows a similar pattern to other individual works of Connacht counties such as Farry’s “Aftermath of Revolution” and O Gadhra’s “Civil War in Connacht” in this area. The reader is provided with portraits of the main protagonists both political and military in the county during the time from both the Irish and British sides and then the protagonists of the Civil War are analysed also. The book is very well referenced and written throughout and provides the reader with an interesting reading list for future reading in the area. ( )
