I don't want to give a single star rating to this book. The storyline starts out pretty wooden, but there are some good lessons.
At first I thought the story was wooden because it might be too close to Chopra's own life (of which I know nothing): young man of Indian ancestry going to med school with a focus on psychiatry. I wasn't that interested in some man who couldn't decide between 2 women to whom he was attracted. Yet he did show insight into interpreting client's behaviors. e.g. "Loneliness is a lot worse than anger. because you can control anger. You have something to hold on to." (p 133) By the end, I decided whether or not his own life followed the same trajectory, a greater reason for a wooden story is that Chopra was interested more in passing on a spiritual truth than in telling a story. Those truths did hook me: that under all the masks and personas we may project and the fears and needs which rule our behavior, we are essentially a being who is looking for love. "...despite everything, a soul wants to be seen. That is its only desire in the world, and the hardest to win." (p 237) Now that affirmation was worth reading. ( )
