This fiction takes place in Mérida. The protagonist works as the supervisor of the aquarium in a resort hotel called The Pyramid. He has recently experimented with setting the fish's movements to music. Because of loss of tourists to the area, the manager has been organizing dangerous outings and experiences for the guests, such as outings to Mayan temples where guerillas with machine guns show up. Now a hotel employee who everyone loved has been killed with a speargun, and it's upset all the employees.

While I felt the translation was good, I couldn't relate to the characters; my enjoyment of the book was the setting. Still, I'll try another Villoro book.

A weird milieu that pulls you in with just about everything a person like me needs in a novel, but sometimes it read a bit too wacky. However, I appreciated the strange mix of mystery and identity misalignment. The book seemed alive at times - as though anything might happen, but then leaves a person wondering what did just happen. Overall, I felt the pervasive sense of doom a bit frightening with something Kafkaesque about it. ( )

Dicen que es novela negra, tal vez. Hay asesinatos, atmósferas asfixiantes, escenarios apocalípticos.
