Coming to terms with rural living- and the whole concept of where your food comes from took the author into very unfamiliar territory. She took a hunter's safety course and an introduction to hunting course-- and then set out to hunt, kill, prepare and eat right from nature. Those of us living in a rural- hunting culture may find this book a bit ridiculous-- but it is interesting to see how a 'city' type thinks about the politics of hunting and the ethics of knowing where your food comes from. Not really my bag, but interesting nonetheless. Full review here: http://fadedhat.blogspot.com/2013/01/book-review-call-of-mild-2012.html Not really my bag, but interesting nonetheless. The book is her personal journey, filled with accounts of several of her hunts, the emotional experience of hunting, and reflections on the hunting culture in general. She talks about how intimate good hunters have to be with their environment. A good hunter studies animal behavior, pays close attention to flora and fauna, and strives to protect the natural balance. She describes the gratitude she feels for her food when she hunts, and the joy when she is able to share with friends and family. I have a lot of respect for people who hunt the way she does, eating everything she kills, being respectful and gracious, and seeing the bigger environmental picture. It really made me want to start hunting. ( )
