A nice collection of shorter short stories....a welcome quality when my life becomes busy and reading time is reduced to a minimum. These O'Hara shorts are clever 'slice of life' moments of a wide variety of characters, both from upper-echelon society as well as bottom of the heap. Short, sweet and to the point, some with more impact than others, but all very revealing of character depth simply by allowing the reader to peek in on a brief scene or 2 in their lives and interactions. I particularly liked "Conversation in the Atomic Age," "Pardner," "Ellie," "War Aims," & "Secret Meeting." I also appreciate, being that one of my other passions beyond books is antique cars, that accurate period car descriptions, including the appearance of several Duesenbergs, kept popping up throughout this collection. I like O'Hara and i love short stories so this was an easy one. Highly recommended for those who appreciate a glimpse of American social life in the 1940's. This book is a collection of twenty-six stories featuring a broad range of typical O'Hara characters: the big shots, the lovelies, the brassy wits, the clucks, the operators, the sharp, the weary, and the disillusioned. These characters are rendered with color, detail, and passion. His stories are both splendid and appalling. O'Hara has been called a photographic observer of American urban life.
