Co-founder of Mule Design and raconteur Mike Monteiro wants to help you do your job better. From contracts to selling design, from working with clients to working with each other, this brief book is packed with knowledge you can’t afford not to know. Foreword by Erik Spiekermann. "Running a design shop is hard. When someone actually gets one off the ground, they’ve got something rare and valuable, so they keep their strategies and practices secret. What makes this book so unique is that it plainly and honestly describes how a successful design shop actually works." –john Gruber, Daring Fireball "'Design Is a Job' is so good it made me want to cry. I am absolutely using it as a textbook in my class this year. I am so grateful that I can point to an actual book, written by a smart and experienced person, that says all the things I’ve been trying to teach my students." –Karen Mcgrane, Managing Partner, Bond Art + Science "'Design Is a Job' is a generous, insightful text sure to become required reading in design schools across the country. I'm a better designer for having read it." –Mike Essl, Dept Chair, Graphic Design, The Cooper Union School of Art "Mike Monteiro's 'Design Is a Job' is a must-read for any designer. If only this book had been around when I started my studio!" –Tina Roth-Eisenberg, Founder, Swissmiss and Creative Mornings… (altro)

I'm not a freelancer or in a small design house where I need to worry about things like billing and contracts (or then again maybe I do, there are things that have gone wrong for me that this suggests should have had expectations set in initial negotiations...), but the advice in here was still well worth reading, especially chapters on process, presenting, and managing feedback. Useful advice and information for any designer out there that is just starting out or that wants to learn about other designers' experiences. ( )

Great! It's a great pep-talk for those of us who deal with this kind of stuff on a regular basis. And since it's not something that gets talked about all that often, in my experience, it's nice to hear someone else's thoughts on dealing with the nuts and bolts of contract design and development work. I started highlighting sections of this book, then gave up because I realized I'd be better off highlighting the few sentences that weren't tremendously useful. If you have anything to do with design in a professional capacity, whether your'e a designer or someone who works with designers, this is one of the best investments of time and money you'll ever make. Read it, think about, talk about it with your colleagues, and use it as a guide. It's a fantastic book. ( )
