"Ned Marriner is spending six weeks with his father in France, where the celebrated photographer is shooting Saint-Sauveur Cathedral in Aix-en-Provence. Both father and son fear for Ned's mother - a physician with Doctors Without Borders, currently assigned to the civil war-torn country of Sudan. This is not the first time she's placed herself in harm's way to help alleviate suffering - and Ned has inherited her courage. He'll need it." "While exploring the cathedral, Ned meets Kate Wenger, an American exchange student with a deep knowledge of the area's history. But even Kate is at a loss when she and Ned surprise a scar-faced stranger, wearing a leather jacket and carrying a knife, deep inside the cathedral. "I think you ought to go now," he tells them. "You have blundered into a corner of a very old story..."""In this ancient place, where the borders between the living and the long-dead are thin, Ned and his family are about to be drawn into a haunted tale, as mythic figures from conflicts of long ago erupt into the present, changing - and claiming - lives."--BOOK JACKET.… (altro)

Ancient enemies at war in an ongoing love triangle get tangled up in modern reality. This pulled me in far more effectively than other Kay novels I have read recently. The plot was much tighter, with fewer far flung threads to reconcile, and better characters. ( )

I enjoyed this fantasy novel set in modern times with a crossover to Celtic legends, but the characters were rather flat, development non-existent, and the plot fairly predictably. Still, a nice light read. ( )

So odd! All throughout the reading of this, I was reminded of the later-published Discovery of Witches by Harkness. Not the story or the characters or the incidentals, mind you, but the FEEL of it. And this one won the World Fantasy Award.

Could it have been a massive influence? Possibly.

Back to this book! It's a real departure from most of the Kay I've read, not steeping itself in historical memorabilia so much as building a bridge between the Celtic history of France and our modern day.

I'll be honest... I loved the feel of it. A lot. It has a genuine YA feel and it is thoroughly wholesome on top of that. Moreso, it had a nice horror feel to some of it as we got moved from the thoroughly grounded modern day things and get plopped into whole-cloth near-immortals and Celtic gods and legends that just rolled over my tongue so deliciously. The YA adventure wasn't half-bad, either! :)

This might be one of my favorite Kay novels. So far. And that isn't because of the award. It's just because it did what Kay's original trilogy that bridged worlds couldn't do for me. It made me care. :) ( )

This book was a delightful surprise, Ysabel is an indirect sequel to Kay's 'Fionavar Tapestry' trilogy, involving a couple of the characters years later - the story is completely independent of that trilogy, however and can be read without any fore-knowledge.

It was a very fast-paced fantasy, with deft touches of Gaelic mythology. I believe this was written more for the young adult market considering the age of the protagonists but at no point is it at all "dumbed down."

I fully recommend this, it is Kay at near-peak, almost touching on the grandeur of 'Tigana'. ( )

There is one story and one story only
that will prove worth your telling,
Wheter as learned bard or gifted child:
To it all lines or lesser gauds belong
that startle with their shining
such common stories as they stray into.

waarin ze verzeild raken wakker schudt.

The woods came to the edge of the property: to the gravel of the drive, the electronic gate, and the green twisted-wire fence that kept out the boars.
Het bos liep door tot de rand van het terrein: tot aan het grind van de oprijlaan, het elektronische toegangshek en de groene afrastering van gevlochten staaldraad die de everzwijnen buitenhield.
