In one way or another, everybody abused Carrie. Her fanatical mother forbade this sixteen-year-old misfit everything that was young and fun. She was teased and taunted by her classmates, misunderstood by her teachers, and given up as hopeless by almost everyone. But Carrie had a secret: she posessed terrifying telekinetic powers that could make inanimate objects move, a lighted candle fall, or a door lock. Carrie could make all kinds of startling bizarre, and malevolent things happen. And so she did one night, when feeling scorned and humiliated, and growing angrier and angrier, she became the vengeful demon who let the whole town feel her power.… (altro)

I remember reading this some time ago. I think I enjoyed it at the time, but it isn't something I'd read now. ( )

The thing that strikes me the most reading King’s first novel is how little his style has changed in nearly fifty years. He’s still better at beginnings than he is at endings, he’s still good at looking at every character as though they’re people with their own inner lives instead of bodies that do things or have things done to them, and he’s still much better at writing men than woman but shows a dogged determination to focus on a lot of female characters anyway. It’s hard to divorce this book from the movie at this point—all throughout I kept hearing that bizarre, perfect delivery of “They’re all going to laugh at you” and seeing Sissy Spacek’s luminous eyes above her blood-stained prom dress—but this book did a perfect job of setting up the decades of horror Stephen King had—and has—in him. Like most people, I mostly knew the story of Carrie through the Brian De Palma film, but I've always wanted to read the book. Even though this is Stephen King's first book, it's still pretty darn good. One thing I love about King's books is he makes them feel like you are reading about something that actually happened. I haven't read another author who can do that quite like him.

Also, another thing I love about this book, and about King in general, is he is unrivaled in stories about growing up and interpreting them into horrifying events. He does the same thing here, and it's great. I'm looking forward to going through the rest of the library.

The formatting of this book wasn't quite was I was expecting. I was expecting to be like most books telling a story from beginning to finish. Some parts were like that and some parts were excerpts from other fictional books, newspapers, and journals. It was definitely interesting. Wasn't scary at all like I thought it was going to be. Because of the formatting, some parts became a little confusing while the narrator was reading it. I think I may have liked it a bit better if I had read it myself. Nevertheless, 4 solid stars is my rating. I definitely felt for Carrie's character, but also completely understood the other characters' motivations and feelings. ( )

Very good. Differs from the movie in that Carrie gets stabbed towards the end and subsequently dies, which I'm sure doesn't happen in the movie. A couple of other differences hit me but I definitely preferred the novel to the movie.

Well worth the time.
