Tangletown is nestled in the southwest corner of the City of Lakes, Minneapolis, Minnesota, between Forty-Sixth Street to the north, Fifty-Fourth Street to the south, Stevens Avenue South to the east, and Lyndale Avenue to the west. Officially known to early twentieth century citizens and Washburn Park, it was platted in 1886 by Senator William D. Washburn, and has long been one of the most desirable neighborhoods within the city limits. Surrounded by winding streets through hills, ravines, grassy knolls, and the splendor of Minnehaha Creek, this charming community owes it popularity to several forward-thinking naturalists who encouraged the protection of its existing natural beauty. Minneapolis professional like Charles Loring and architect Harry Wild Jones, together with Chicago landscape architect Horace Cleveland, envisioned Tangletown's continuing desirability, with its park-like surrounds, for generations to come. Ongoing preservation efforts by dedicated homeowners to maintain and renew these proud old structures are visible throughout the neighborhood. Guarded by the distinction of its gothic-style water tower, designated a city landmark in July, 1980, Tangletown is indeed an urban jewel. These venerable homes, and the residents who built and lived in them beginning in the 1880s, are the subjects of this book. Tangletown has been the home of countless Minneapolis professionals who brought the city out of its infancy into adulthood. They were inventors, architects, attorneys, judges, doctors, writers, clergyman, and many more. Each, with their families, left an impression in the community, in some instances the world, and touched their neighbors' lives in profound ways. - Dust jacket.
