NCLA Review: This is one of the most attractive children’s books I’ve seen—lots and lots of illustrations in bold colors on wipe-clean board pages. Some are slightly raised, adding a tactile element. The accompanying audio CD includes some background sounds, although not all are recognizable. The stories are another matter. Especially surprising coming from a publisher that brings out books for preschoolers and advertises this for ages 3+, the vocabulary is far too advanced for even older children and uses far too many words to retain a child’s attention, read or heard. The selected stories also contain aspects which could frighten little ones, concepts such as God being angry (Noah), and babies being thrown into the river (Moses). Even the Christmas story includes the slaughter of the innocents! On the face of it, I would give this book high marks, but because of the content I really don’t recommend it—for church libraries or individuals. Rating: 1 —DKW ( )
