Charles Chilton's classic science fiction trilogy stormed the BBC airwaves during the 1950s. Its gripping story lines, extra-terrestrial sound effects and atmospheric music engaged the listener as never before. Between 1953 and 1958, a devoted audience of adults and children attentively followed Captain Jet Morgan and his crew from one cliff-hanger to another as, together, they faced the unknown perils of space. In this, the very first series, Captain Jet Morgan, Doc Matthews, engineer Mitch Mitchell and the irrepressible radio operator Lemmy Barnet blast off in the rocket ship Luna, destined to be the first men in the moon. Marooned on the surface with all radio contact to Earth lost, the crew realise they are not alone. Something is out there, something alien. As a sequence of unnerving events unfold, the space travellers find themselves propelled not only through space, but time itself.… (altro)

I feel a little weird putting a radiodrama on goodreads but i guess its no different than an audiobook. Also this is pretty awesome so i'll make an exception.
The audio version available is from a 1958 recording although the original is from '53. This version is a little cut down and you can tell towards the 3/4 mark where the edits are.
Still that doesn't effect the story much, this is far more advanced sci-fi than i was expecting from the 50's. Really solid intellectual sci-fi, gets a little bit expositional at the end but really enjoyable overall. ( )

The year is 1965 [*12 years into the future]. The rocket ship "Luna" sets off for the Moon with it's four man crew: Jet, Doc, Mitch and Lemmy; but, right from the start things start to go wrong. Radio contact with Earth is lost and Lemmy hears an eerie unexplained sound he describes as 'music'. Its only the start of a bizarre adventure for this crew...

'Journey into Space' was a sensation when it was first aired between 1953–1954 - However, what I am reviewing are the abridged versions released on audio tape in 1998 (*Unabridged editions are now available on CD) in either respect, these are both vastly cut down version in both script and cast from the original 1953 radio serial recordings, and were produced for the BBC Transcription Services in 1958. In fact it was long since assumed that even these later recordings were lost till they turned up over 20 years later misfiled!

All in all I thoroughly enjoyed this adventure, which still felt exciting and original even after over 50 years gathering dust.

Once on the Moon strange happenings continue and Jet has visions of both the past and the future and the rest of the crew experience various effects of what seems like madness. A total loss of power forces the crew to get stuck on the Moon almost till the air supply runs out, but just then a UFO is seen on the televiewer, accompanied by the eerie noise from before. Then power is suddenly restored to the ship, and the UFO lands outside. Mitch decides to investigate the inside of the UFO, where he is temporarily possessed by an alien intelligence before getting back to Luna.
The ship finally takes off while a fleet of UFOs pursues them. But, the UFOs accelerate Luna at incredible speed till the crew blacks out. When they awake, they find themselves in deep space approaching a distance planet.

The crew land Luna on the planet and discover that it shares many of Earth's characteristics - oxygen atmosphere, drinkable water, vegetation and ice-caps at both the poles. The planet is like Earth, too much like Earth. One starry night Jet realises the horrible truth. They are on Earth! but they've travelled thousands of years back in time.
Just then a UFO lands nearby warning the crew that they are in great danger, and persuades them to enter the UFO, which takes off for to bring the crew to a domed city.
The crew learn more about the alien they call 'the voice' and his people who are a peaceful civilisation. Exploring the planet the crew enter a domed building, walk down a long dark tunnel, and arrive at a huge underground city. Finally they are invited into another building to meet their host, but what they find is terrifying to behold.

'The voice' is obviously displeased to learn that the crew are descended from the 'forest creatures' what he calls destructive and hostile animals; but, after much debate, agrees to help the crew get back to their own time. Luna takes off and is accelerated by the UFOs; but the crew blacks out again.

The crew find themselves on the Moon in 1965 again, but with no recollection of their adventures except for Doc's diary along with a prehistoric stone knife as a memento of their adventures and proof that they really did happen.

Today it still enjoys a huge fanbase, with active websites and keenly received repeats on digital radio channel BBC Radio 4 Extra.

Journey into Space was a glorified interstellar 'horse-opera' with no coherent plot, which relied on odd musical arrangements to bolster up the stilted conversations of characters with no substance. There were no convincing word pictures of the new world: 'Jet' lacked tact and leader qualities and 'Lemmy' was an improbable space traveller, not to mention electronic engineer!

Hats off to Charles Chilton, who has switched from Riders of the Range to Journey Into Space with masterly ease. I rate this space travel serial as the most exciting piece of radio material for years.
