> ENTRETIENS SUR IA FIN DES TEMPS, avec Jean-Claude Carrière, Jean Delumeau, Umberto Eco et Stephen Jay Gould. — C’est une évidence, la fin de siècle favorise les interrogations et les inquiétudes les plus diverses sur la fin du monde et la fin des temps. À moins d’ironiser sur les fausses prophéties des contemporains, il n’est pas inutile de rappeler qu’il y a là une mythologie qui a toute une histoire, comme le montre Umberto Eco dans cet ouvrage composé de quatre entretiens dont la teneur est fort différente. Ix* texte le plus éclairant est celui de l'historien de la peur Jean Delumeau. qui réussit à merveille à mettre en scène les diverses traditions religieuses liées à l’idée de fin des temps. Évoquant le rapport entre le judaïsme ancien et le christianisme, il explique avec clarté la signification de l’Apocalypse et montre comment les croyances millénaristes sont inséparables d'une histoire religieuse fort ancienne.
