Na Berlim de 1949, Grillet constrói uma história de duplos, sombras, mistérios e possibilidades, pontuada pelo assassinato de um homem, numa literatura sempre provocadora e envolvente. A trama acontece tem como cenário o ano de 1949. O agente Henri Robin viaja pela capital alemã em ruínas, encarregado de uma difícil missão. Durante a missão Henri depara-se com seu duplo perfeito - cópia mal disfarçada apenas por um bigode postiço.
