Murder puts Lawrence Sanders's Palm Beach PI in the prime suspect spotlight in the series "effortlessly written to be effortlessly enjoyed" (The Boston Globe).   Hired to retrieve a client's kiss-and-tell-all diary from her blackmailing ex-lover, Archy McNally doesn't expect the mission to go awry. He makes the exchange easily enough, but as the Palm Beach private investigator returns to his sports car, he's knocked out cold. When he wakes up, the diary is gone.   Except it wasn't a diary McNally was playing go-between to collect. It was the Holy Grail of lost literature--the original manuscript of Truman Capote'sAnswered Prayers. McNally will need some divine intervention of his own when he becomes the prime suspect in a homicide investigation headed by vampy, green-eyed blonde Georgia O'Hara. With everyone trying to seize the Capote opus, it's up to McNally to write off a killer who's waiting to close the book on him--permanently.   … (altro)

I have read every Archy McNally book, and I've enjoyed each of them.
I think Vincent Lardo has done a wonderful job in taking over the series where Lawrence Sanders left off and I really enjoyed this latest book.

On the positive side, I was happy to see the wonderful descriptions of Ursi's marvelous cooking as well as Archy's eclectic wardrobe. On the negative side, I would have liked to have seen more dialogue with Lolly Spindrift and I was annoyed at how much he "dumbed down" Al Rogoff. Any true Archy McNally fans will be very disappointed at how stupid Al is portrayed in this latest novel and as anyone knows, Archy would never associate with someone that "low rent".

I have long suspected that this Archy was based, at least in part, on Archie Goodwin of the NERO WOLFE mysteries. Yet Archie Goodwin always was suave and elegant, like Cary Grant or James Bond. Never in this series has Archy McNally been suave and elegant; he actually was kind of fey from the very first book. Since that first book was published, a new word has been coined, "metrosexual," referring to straight men who enjoy pleasures usually perceived as gay, such as facials and manicures. Not James Bond but more Niles Crane, the brother on the television series FRASIER. That describes Archy to a tee.

And now Lieutenant Georgy O'Hara has entered the picture. Good for Archie, and the story line as well! I was getting a bit tired of his on again/off again affair with the jealous Cuban hot-head. Connie should have moved along several books ago, in my opinion. If he had been my boyfriend he would have been toast after the second dalliance, client or no client! And I just don't see her fitting in with the Anglo-Saxon background of the McNally brood. Georgy is like a breath of fresh air. Hope to see more of her in future novels.

Lardo delivers a fast-paced and enjoyable read. Archy's observations on the personalities of Palm Beach, Florida, the foibles of the rich, and Archy's own reasoning to wear another fuchsia shirt add to the fun. A great Sunday afternoon read. ( )
