London defense attorney Philip Kennford's money provides a gorgeous house, a wardrobe worthy of Milan runways-- but it can't provide a happy marriage, or good relationships with his twin daughters. And it does nothing to protect his family when someone brutally murders his wife and daughter in their own home. When Detective Constable Maeve Kerrigan arrives at the scene, the two survivors-- Philip and his second favorite daughter, Lydia-- both claim to have seen nothing, but it's clear right away that this is an unhappy family accustomed to keeping secrets.… (altro)

Their boss Superintendent Godley is waiting for DI Josh Derwent and DC Maeve Kerrigan when they arrive at the murder scene, for the husband, who was not killed is a well known QC, Philip Kennford. Right from the beginning Maeve feels they are not being told all there is to know. A mother and one of her 15 year old twin daughters have been killed and the other twin is not talking. The father is abrasive, waiting for the police to make wrong moves.

It turns out to be a very complex case and Superintendent Godley is also managing a second case related to conflict between rival gangs. Maeve is managing her new relationships with her misogynistic DI as well as a new live in partner.

As you can see from my list below I have missed out on reading some of the titles in the series, so I'm trying to catch up, but it is playing around with my sense of continuity, although in the major sense each title can be read as a stand-alone. ( )

This one was a bit disappointing. The main case - the murders of Vita and Laura Kennford and the attack on Philip Kennford - was interrupted from time to time with a (frankly boring) story about gang warfare and the reappearance of Maeve's stalker. The stalker storyline gave Maeve yet another opportunity to almost break things off with Rob, and remains unresolved.

The Kennfords were really quite staggering in their universal hideousness and were unlike any family I have ever encountered in real life. The conclusion of that case was outlandish and psychologically unconvincing.

I hope the next instalment is an improvement. ( )

This series just gets better with every book. I love the way the author is able to weave together complex plots and create three-dimensional characters. Highly recommended, but be sure to read the series in order. ( )

Great twists, although I nearly guessed the killer.
Some romance, like in the last book, but not too much.
I think in skimming through 2-3 star-reviews I saw complaints, that this book is not as good as the first 2 and I beg to differ.
Three different story-line intertwined, one without conclusion and a good continuation with characters and problems from [b:The Burning|10769683|The Burning (Maeve Kerrigan, #1)|Jane Casey|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1317067725s/10769683.jpg|14449306].
Cannot wait to read the next book, but will start instead with [b:How to Fall|17934525|How to Fall|Jane Casey|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1405301180s/17934525.jpg|21968740] (her new YA-series), before going back to other (probably YA) books.
High recommendation, for some 5 stars might be too much, but I think the great scenery and the people warrant it. ( )
