This teaching unit is designed to supplement your students' study of the Progressive Years in American history. The Progressive years were a period of racial tension and ethnocentrism. The documents included reflect a wide range of social, political, economic, and cultural themes of these years, as seen from the points of view of citizens who corresponded with the federal government. The Progressive Years: 1898-1917includes a booklet containing a teachers guide, a set of reproductions of original documents, and a CD-ROM containing exercise worksheets and digital images of original documents. The unit is made up of 18 exercises, each of which includes reproductions of documents from the National Archives and suggests classroom activities based on these documents. The documents include personal letters, news clippings, photographs, graphs, and telegrams. Students practice the historian's skills as they complete exercises using these documents to gather information, identify points of view, weigh evidence, form hypotheses, and draw conclusions.
