Naturally, the Dana Girls get top marks, as well as their friends Evelyn Starr and Helen Brewster. Lettie Briggs is allowed on the trip for dubious reasons that likely involve her parent's money. I read the story a few months ago, so I don't know how Mildred Wirt (the ghost writer and woman behind many early Nancy Drews) managed that without blemishing the reputations of the Crandalls. Mona is upset, but there is a convenient loophole that allows her to visit Moon Lake: the Dana sisters' aunt and her maid Cora Appel are visiting the vicintrity to meet with a lawyer about a bit of money Cora was willed by a distant relative. Mona is allowed to be the guest of Miss Dana. The house is a lonely one and long-abandoned, but the girls are cheerful enough until mysterious noises in the night raise the question of HAUNTINGS.
This was another fun installment. Readers should be wary of the use of the magical Native Americans trope, but the intent was at least respectful and the story gains credit by maligning those who stole and would continue to steal land from First Nations peoples.
