Readable but left me feeling that it skimmed a surface of a possibly good mythos.

Bess Suncatcher is a raven shape-shifter, the cloak that is her skin can provide her with any kind of clothing so long as it's black. Cesar Garza is a soul whisperer, considered unclean by his tribe he reads what happened to people when they died, making him an excellent FBI agent. The two of them have to find out what's killing young women and have to face up to the fact that genocide is not entered into lightly.

It felt like there should be more depth to it, readable but nothing terribly exciting. ( )

I am loving this series. I got this book over a month ago but I waited until now to read it because Bess was never a favorite character of mine, but I grew to love her and can't wait to read up on her and about Nagi's children in the next installment.

Each book unveils something new and fascinating about this world that keeps this series exciting and fresh. Jenna Kernan's stories blow me away.

There was one thing that kept me distracted though. Being a local to the story's setting, I kept wondering which Redwood Forest Jenna referred to? I was thinking about the Redwood National and State Parks, which is at least a few hours north of San Francisco. In the books, the characters travel from SF to the Redwoods often enough, making it sound like they were in Marin County. One part of the book said the journey was 40 minutes past the Golden Gate Bridge. Anyway, this isn't an important matter; just something that was on my mind a lot. ( )
