Michael Kirby is one of Australia's most admired public figures. At a time of spin and obfuscation, he speaks out passionately and straightforwardly on the issues that are important to him. Even those who disagree with him have been moved by the courage required of him to come out as a high-profile homosexual, which at times has caused him to be subjected to the most outrageous assaults on his character. This is a collection of reminiscences in which we can discover the private Michael Kirby. It allows the public figure to speak in his own voice, without any intermediary. He opens up as never before about his early life, about being gay, about his thirty-year relationship with Johan van Vloten, about his religious beliefs and even about his youthful infatuation with James Dean, which sent him on a sentimental journey to Dean's hometown in the year 2000, an escapade he here wryly recalls. Beautifully written, reflective and generous, in that warm and gently self-deprecating voice that is so characteristic of him, this is a memoir that Michael Kirby's many admirers have been waiting for.… (altro)

Memoirs are a bit hit and miss for me, and this one was far more miss than hit, because I found Kirby at times remote and at others unlikeable. I can’t even point at why, because I did find aspects of the essays really interesting. In the essay on meeting his life partner, Kirby comes across as not really liking his younger self, which made me quite uncomfortable. On the other hand, the essay on talking to members of the legal profession in Africa (I forget which country, and I don’t have the book to hand) gave a really good perspective on the AIDS crisis I hadn’t previously been even remotely aware of. I received this book as a gift (a signed copy by Michael Kirby himself). As one of the most notable high court judges in Australia throughout history, and being a law graduate myself, reading his autobiography was a pleasure. I think that this book is worth reading, as it outlines a very worthy person in Australia's history, and his struggles with being gay in an accepting Australia at the time. ( )

I was really keen to read this memoir, from one of Australia's contemporary, influential public figures - justice of the high court and gay, as the title implies, it is a collection of memories, a collection of essays really, themed largely around his sexuality, discrimination and education and his experiences tarvelling around the world. Michael Kirby has a lot more to say I'd suggest - he did not expand as much as I was hoping on his career, his friends, colleagues, family, politics, the legal system, major public events - and so I look forward to his next collection. In the meantime, sense this book was pulled together to get some facts on the table about his homosexuality. It's an easy, accessible read, at times a bit of gay, gay fun, revelation. I do hope, though, more Michael Kirby memoirs will follow on broader events during his career - he has a lot to share. ( )
