Content: As with any encyclopedia, the World Book has information about almost any topic one can think of: animals, countries, famous historians, hobbies, etc. The books are laid out alphabetically with certain letters combined due to size of the book (J & K for example are in one book whereas A has a book all to itself).

My reaction: Although packed full of information, encyclopedias are slowly becoming extinct and for good reason. It is simply too difficult to keep these tomes up to date in book format. These particular encyclopedias were only published in 2009 and already the pictures look dated. Considering the cost involved in printing these massive books, I think we will be going entirely digital fairly soon.

Growing articles, visual aids, word by word arrangement, guide words, entry cross-reference, headings and subheadings noted with square symbol with captions, key word, tables for Facts in Brief (almanac type) Tables of Terms, Tables of Important Dates, Additonal Resources (Level 1 or Level 2), Related Articles in World Book, "respelling" gives pronunciation. Also Volune 22 is Research Guide and Index.

***Review of Database***Online encyclopedias exist beyond Wikipedia. World Book Encyclopedia has an online database for children. It is more interactive then the volumes of books while containing the same information. Searching is easy and does not require finding the proper volume, but the organization is slightly difficult to browse. For example when looking for baseball, one has to click on sports and then stick and ball games. There are many different entries on baseball but you then must sort through the golf and hockey entries without the option to refine your search. This of course is easier than looking through the entire print collection alphabetically, but online environments can easily allow further refinement. Another advantage of the database is that it includes games such as puzzles and science quizzes. Ages: 5-9. ( )

A comprehensive reference for older students perfoming research. Some sophisticated language so not appropriate for younger students. A great starting point for any research projects.

World Book is a very popular and common encyclopedia given its long history. The photographs complements the readable text. Information is presented in a clear and concise manner. However, the information in the print version is similar to the online version. A good set to have in any school library.
