This is the rugged, true and tragic history of Operation: Marketgarden. Mr. Ryan does a grand job of introducing us to the men involved in this operation, from the generals down to the cooks. The only trouble is that this is the largest operation of World War II and there are just too darn many of them to keep straight. So you just have to slog forward (somewhat like they did) and trust in the author. With that in mind, you are treated to the grand sweep of the plan, the infeasibility of key parts of it and the personal cost and valor involved in attempting it. Good maps and photos, too. (

A tremendous book. Wonderful movement between the big picture and the personal details. The details of personal experiences in war are worth reading again and again. (

Tras el desembarco de Normandía los Aliados liberan Francia y Bélgica, los alemanes huyen despavoridos hacia Alemania. El Mariscal de campo británico Bernard Montgomery diseña un plan para acabar con la II Guerra Mundial en el año 1944 (un año antes de su verdadero final). El plan que llevaba el nombre clave de Market-Garden tenía dos partes, la parte Market donde 35.000 hombres serían lanzados el 17 de Septiembre de 1944 en paracaídas sobre Holanda (Todavía ocupada por el ejercito alemán) y una vez allí apoderarse de un número determinado de puentes para permitir que tropas terrestres (esta es la segunda parte del Plan, llamada “Garden”) pudieran llegar desde Bélgica, atravesando Holanda , hasta Alemania.

Read this many years ago as a teenager. My dad and I share a love of military history and he passed this on to me. Very riveting even for a teenaged girl. (
