Dr. Quiñones grew up poor in Mexico and worked in the fields of California, yet 10 years later enrolls in medical school at Harvard and today is a leading neurosurgeon and scientist. Dr. Q is earnest and enthusiastic about sharing his story (witness the many exclamation points he uses), always tying his successes back to his roots and family. His story also provides a tantalizing glimpse of what brain surgery is and what it takes to succeed in the field, sometimes at the cost of other priorities. ( ) I found the journey of Dr Q from a small town in Mexico to an operating room and research lab in Baltimore to be quite inspiring. I think he is an example of "...every man and woman - being the architect of their own destiny." He has also made me think about his statement that: No matter how different we are from one another... our brains are all the same." I am guessing, here in January of 2012, that this will be among my all time favorite books read. What an incredible man he is! This is a perfectly wonderful, emotional, motivational, dramatic, etc., etc., book about a life that, thank goodness, Dr. Q is only in the middle of----he'll be able to write another book about his life later on--maybe to help all the rest of us learn to live each day more to its full potential as well as to treat everyone, absolutely everyone, with the respect they deserve as a fellow human being on this earth. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione

Today he is known as Dr. Q, an internationally renowned neurosurgeon and neuroscientist who leads cutting-edge research to cure brain cancer. But not too long ago, he was Freddy, a nineteen-year-old undocumented migrant worker toiling in the tomato fields of central California. In this gripping memoir, Alfredo Quiñones-Hinojosa tells his amazing life story-from his impoverished childhood in the tiny village of Palaco, Mexico, to his harrowing border crossing and his transformation from illegal immigrant to American citizen and gifted student at the University of California at Berkeley and at Harvard Medical School. Packed with adventure and adversity-including a few terrifying brushes with death-Becoming Dr. Q is a testament to persistence, hard work, the power of hope and imagination, and the pursuit of excellence. It's also a story about the importance of family, of mentors, and of giving people a chance. Non sono state trovate descrizioni di biblioteche |
