New Adult Sci-fi/Paranormal Romance/Suspense
First the negatives.
Slow moving from about a quarter of the way in up to the end. Things definitely could have moved faster throughout the book. There is a lot of repetition and various types of errors. None of the errors got in the way of the flow of the story. The repetition and speed of action does. So much so, I would find myself nodding off or skipping over paragraphs.
Now the positives.
A great storyline. The good parts are REALLY good. The main characters and the secondary characters are all very interesting. The world build is intriguing.
I liked the story, but I didn't love it. However, it does have me wondering what happens in the next book.
Truthfully, I don't understand all the 5 star reviews. Maybe they have a better copy that has all the repetition and slow parts edited out. For me it is a solid 3 stars.

A very enjoyable sci fi romance. It wasn't perfect but it was a fun read.

First I liked that the story started in the middle of the action. There was no long winded set up. That way you were immediately drawn into the story hoping that Anya would be able to escape her ship and stow away on the other.

The sci fi elements were okay. Not the most fully developed I've ever read but decent. For example no thought was given to the possibility that the mechanics of sex might be problematic for two people of dissimilar races. And mechanics of ship drive were not given any thought. You can't just throw in warp drive and call 'er done. First warp drive is unique to Star Trek. Accepted convention in the sci fi world is to use FTL or faster than light speed to talk about engines. Scientist and theorists in the field all agree that just going faster is not the answer, that folding space or worm holes (essentially the same thing) or something of that sort, some sort of place not actually of the universe proper is going to be necessary. Anyhoo, using warp drive shows you didn't put a lot of thought into it. I could go into more detail about elements that didn't work so well on the sci fi front but I won't although I usually have low tolerance for poor sci fi in an SFR. The reason I'm not too worried about it is that it was well enough done to hang the rest of the story on and that other part of the story was good.

The strength of the story was definitely the characterization and the building of the relationship between the hero and the heroine. However, having the hero named Sebastian in a book that had not even a toe hold on Earth was kind of strange. Plus calling them Demons was an odd choice. These guys are aliens. Make up a name for their people don't burden them with the associations that the word demon has. Maybe the author was trying to shorthand her characterization but it bothered me throughout the entire book. I liked the way their race was described and the things that happened like the horns heating up and changing colors and the going to the Edge thing. I enjoyed the heroine and how courageous and how pragmatic she was. She just rolled with the punches and made the best of her situation. I felt like the love between them was well done and mostly believable. I'n not sure I buy the fated mate thing across species from different planets. The interaction between the two was sweet and fun. The secondary characters were interesting and I'm looking forward to the brother and sister each having a book.

There were a few other problems in two major areas. First the ending was a bit contrived. The story felt as it the major threads and plot lines were being forced unnaturally and awkwardly to go where the author wanted them to. Who sent the magical book to the very person who needed it at exactly the right time to arrive there with the heroine who had been lost for years but just happened to escape to the right ship? Funny how the wards that kept the heroine on the ship had no real reason except to keep the heroine on the ship. Second the editing was awful. There were tense problems and atrocious word usage problems. I tried to ignore them as the story was good but they did jump out at you.

All in all though if you like SFR I think you'll like this one. I will definitely be getting the next book. ( )

This is the first in the Shadow Quest Series by Kiersten Fay. This was my first title of hers and I was immediately hooked and read the entire series after finishing this one. Anya has been held captive and abused on another ship and sees an opportunity to escape when she stows away on a merchant ship run by demons. Once she is discovered, she remains on the ship and begins to develop relationships with the crew members, particularly with the captain, Sebastian, with who she shares an immediate and mutual attraction. The captain and crew are on a mission which they must complete before they can drop her off and it eventually becomes apparent that there is more to her than initially seemed.
This book was impossible to put down. There is an underlying story that carries through all the books in the series, with each book being the story of one of the crew of the ship and their mate. The books can be read standalone, but once you read this one, you'll want to keep on going to find out not only what happens with each of the crew member's own story but also the overall adventure that they are all drawn into. A sexy sci-fi with a suspenseful and detailed storyline, this one’s not your average romance. With characters as diverse and interesting as these, the plot moves seamlessly while holding your attention. There’s action as well as romance, and the supporting characters feature well within the plot, as I’m sure there will be other books in the series. Fans of Fay will be happy with this one!

What a novel, and there's a SERIES!! I like that Anya took actions in her hands and escaped from Darius, but hidden in another ship as a stow away would she spend another decade in another prison cell? I liked how Captain Sebastian, a demon and captain of the Marada took care of Anya when she almost died when she hid too long with nothing to eat or drink. Back on Darius's ship that only gave her scraps, some edible some not. Sebastian tried to ignore the oblivious when day after day he couldn't get the stow way out of his mind and he knew that she was hiding something and with a ship full of aliens he vowed to find out what.
