From the beginning, Myrna Loy's screen image conjured mystery, a sense of something withheld. "Who is she?" was a question posed in the first fan magazine article published about her in 1925. This first ever biography of the wry and sophisticated actress best known for her role as Nora Charles, wife to dapper detective William Powell in The Thin Man, offers an unprecedented picture of her life and an extraordinary movie career that spanned six decades. Opening with Loy's rough-and-tumble upbringing in Montana, the book takes us to Los Angeles in the 1920s, where Loy's striking looks caught the eye of Valentino, through the silent and early sound era to her films of the thirties, when Loy became a top box office draw, and to her robust post-World War II career. Throughout, Emily W. Leider illuminates the actress's friendships with luminaries such as Cary Grant, Clark Gable, and Joan Crawford and her collaborations with the likes of John Barrymore, David O. Selznick, Sam Goldwyn, and William Wyler, among many others. This highly engaging biography offers a fascinating slice of studio era history and gives us the first full picture of a very private woman who has often been overlooked despite her tremendous star power.… (altro)

Good bio. Very detailed! ( )

This is a so-so book on 1930’s film star Myrna Loy who was known as “The Perfect Wife” for her roles in The Thin Man series and opposite other leading men such as Clark Gable and Frederic March. However, most of the book is a rehash of Loy’s own autobiography published many, many years ago. I felt as if the author did not come up with much original research except for comments by the children of Loy’s spouses children. The author provides a great deal of time summarizing films and in most instances doesn’t even appear to like the films. For me, Test Pilot, is one of the great Gable-Tracy-Loy films and one of Victor Fleming’s best as well. If Myrna did not get the chance to shine, the author did not seem to like the film. It just seemed to me that the author was a bit lazy in not finding any new information and relying so much on Loy’s own autobiography. Otherwise, there were some nice photos as well as some good information on Loy’s early years in Montana. ( )

I don't know why this book was written. I found out absolutely nothing about Myrna Loy or her life or her pictures that I did not already know. There were not enough pictures and certainly not enough unknown to warrant this bio. ( )
